Aerobic Gymnastics Events Explained
Aerobic gymnastics combines high-intensity aerobic movement with elements of strength, flexibility and acrobatics, performed to music on a 10m x 10m floor. The sport has been contested at World Championships since 1995, when the first edition was held in Paris. Routines are scored differently depending on the category: individual, pair, trio and group routines are marked on difficulty, execution and artistry, while Aerobic Dance and Aerobic Step are judged on execution and artistry only.
Individual Women & Individual Men
Individual routines last 1 minute 20 seconds and are built from eight elements, drawn from dynamic strength moves (such as push-up variations), static strength holds (including planches), jumps, turns and splits, with limited acrobatic elements such as handsprings also permitted. Performing more than eight elements results in a deduction, while combining up to three elements in sequence earns a connection bonus. The two individual events differ in one key respect: men must include a dynamic leap element and are not permitted to perform flexibility or balance elements, while women are required to perform a turn. With no partner to share the workload, individual gymnasts carry the full difficulty, execution and artistry score alone, making this the most physically demanding category in the sport.
Mixed Pair
Mixed Pair routines are performed by one male and one female gymnast, who must execute the same elements simultaneously while also demonstrating collaborative movement, such as lifts or synchronised transitions. Because execution deductions are taken from the weaker of the two performances on any given element, consistency between partners matters as much as individual technical ability.
Trio
Trio events feature three gymnasts, who may be any combination of genders, performing in unison. As with pairs, the difficulty score is calculated from the elements performed and then divided by a factor that varies according to the gender make-up of the trio, while execution marks are based on the least clean performance of each shared element across the three athletes, putting a premium on collective consistency over individual brilliance.
Group
Groups consist of five gymnasts, again of any gender combination, performing fast-paced, tightly coordinated routines. As in trios, the difficulty divisor shifts depending on whether the group is all-male, all-female or mixed. With five athletes moving through the same sequence at once, clean formations and synchronisation carry significant weight in the execution score.
Aerobic Dance
Aerobic Dance is performed by a group of eight gymnasts and, unlike the other categories, is scored on execution and artistry alone, with no difficulty component. This shifts the emphasis toward musicality, creativity and use of space, while the routine retains the continuous, high-energy movement patterns that define the sport.
Aerobic Step
Aerobic Step also involves teams of eight and is judged the same way as Aerobic Dance, on execution and artistry rather than difficulty. Athletes incorporate a raised step platform into their choreography, combining aerobic movement and transitions on and around the step, making it one of the more visually distinct disciplines within the sport.
Recap: 2024 Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships
The 18th FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships took place in Pesaro, Italy from 27-29 September 2024, with world titles on the line across eight medal events.
China topped the medal table with two gold, one silver and one bronze medal, narrowly ahead of Japan (two gold, one silver) and hosts Italy (one gold and two bronze medals).
- In the Individual Men's final, Spain's Miquel Mañé won the title, ahead of Japan's Mizuki Saito and home favourite Davide Nacci of Italy.
- Japan's Riri Kitazume won the Individual Women's title, edging out Ukraine's Anastasiia Kurashvili and France's Maëlys Leclos.
- Kitazume and Saito then teamed up to win the Mixed Pair world title. Azerbaijan's Madina Mustafayeva and Vladimir Dolmatov took silver, with Tamires Silva and Lucas Barbosa of Brazil completing the podium.
- China topped both the Trio and Group finals, with France and Bulgaria rounding out the Trio podium and Vietnam and Italy taking silver and bronze in Group.
- South Korea won the Aerobic Step title ahead of China and Ukraine, while Hungary claimed the Aerobic Dance world title ahead of Romania and South Korea, underlining the depth of competition across the team events.
