Recap: FIG Apparatus World Cup Cottbus 2026

The 2026 series began in Cottbus, one of the longest running World Cup stops. The German event once again attracted a deep field of Olympic medallists and established specialists.

Among the standout names in Cottbus:

  • Kaylia Nemour (ALG), the reigning World and Olympic uneven bars champion, endured a rare fall in Saturday's bars final but responded with silver on the balance beam. During Thursday's qualification, she successfully unveiled a new release element, highlighting her continued technical progression.
  • Shohei Kawakami (JPN) was one of the most impressive performers of the weekend, claiming gold on parallel bars and returning to top the podium again on horizontal bar.
  • On floor exercise, Artem Dolgopyat (ISR) set the tone early in the competition by taking gold.

Cottbus also demonstrated how tight apparatus finals can be early in the season, with several medals decided by tenths and even hundredths. Baku now offers gymnasts a chance to build momentum, adjust difficulty, and strengthen their World Cup rankings.

National Gymnastics Arena: Milli Gimnastika Arenasi

Baku has firmly established itself as a major hub for international gymnastics. The National Gymnastics Arena has hosted multiple FIG World Cup stages since 2016 and continental championships across artistic, rhythmic and trampoline disciplines, including the 2019 Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships and the 2021 Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships.

The modern arena setup, athlete friendly environment and experienced local organisation have made it a popular stop among gymnasts. Azerbaijan's continued investment in gymnastics infrastructure ensures strong crowds and professional conditions for elite level competition.

Male Gymnasts to Watch in Baku

Rhys McClenaghan (IRL) - Pommel Horse

One of the most consistent pommel horse specialists of the past Olympic cycle, McClenaghan brings world class difficulty and exceptional rhythm to the apparatus. Pommel horse finals are often decided by execution precision, and few manage the apparatus with his composure.

Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) - Rings

The Rio 2016 Olympic Champion on rings is a three-time World Champion (2015, 2017, and 2018) and eight-time European Champion. Known as one of the greatest rings specialists of his generation, Petrounias remains a benchmark for strength elements and execution precision.

Milad Karimi (KAZ) - Floor Exercise & Horizontal Bar

Karimi is a World Championship bronze medallist on floor exercise in Antwerp 2023. He is known for high-difficulty tumbling passes and aggressive high bar routines, making him a strong podium threat.

Female Gymnasts to Watch in Baku

Kaylia Nemour (ALG) - Uneven Bars & Balance Beam

The reigning World and Olympic uneven bars champion is confirmed in Baku. Nemour's bars difficulty remains among the highest in the world, and she also adds medal potential on balance beam. If she delivers a clean routine, she sets the scoring pace.

Teja Belak (SLO) - Vault

Belak is the 2025 FIG Apparatus World Cup series winner on vault, and she won the bronze medal on the apparatus at the last stop in Cottbus. Her explosive vaulting makes her a proven World Cup performer.
