About the European Short Course Swimming Championships

The European Short Course Swimming Championships is one of the continent's premier swimming events, contested in a 25-metre pool. Organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN), it takes place every odd year and serves as a showcase for both Olympic medallists and emerging European talents. Germany, Russia and the Netherlands currently lead the overall medal table.

First held in 1996, the competition has travelled across Europe, from Lisbon to Glasgow to Otopeni, providing a stage for record-breaking performances. Since 2012 the championships have included 40 events: 19 for men, 19 for women and 2 mixed events. In 2025, it heads to Lublin, Poland, marking the first time the city has hosted a major swimming championship. Poland last hosted the championships in 2011 in Szczecin.

What Does Short Course Mean In Swimming?

In swimming, short course refers to races held in a 25-metre pool, compared to long course swimming where events are raced in 50-metre Olympic-sized swimming pools. Short course competitions include more turns, which can affect speed and strategy.

Is Short Course Swimming Faster?

Yes - short course swimming is generally faster. The additional turns allow swimmers to push off the wall more often, gaining momentum from each underwater phase, which typically results in quicker times compared to long course events.

Short Course Swimming Time Standards

Time standards in short course swimming are qualifying benchmarks that athletes must achieve to enter major competitions. These standards differ from long course times due to the shorter pool length and increased turns, which make short course times naturally faster.

Swimming Strokes

The championships feature all Olympic-style swimming disciplines adapted for the short course (25m) format:

  • Freestyle: The fastest stroke, featuring distances from 50m to 1500m.
  • Backstroke: Swimmers race on their backs, combining speed and control off every wall.
  • Breaststroke: Technically demanding, emphasizing timing, glide, and power.
  • Butterfly: Known for its intensity, requiring synchronized upper-body strength and rhythm.
  • Individual Medley: Combines all four strokes in one race, testing all-round skill.
  • Relays: Team events that often deliver the loudest and most dramatic moments of the meet.

Swimmers To Watch

The 2025 championships are expected to feature a stellar field of European and Olympic champions:

  • David Betlehem (HUN) - Having captured bronze in the 10km open water event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Betlehem returns to the pool for the SC championships, registered to swim 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle. His transition from open water to pool makes him one of the more intriguing entrants.
  • Duncan Scott (GBR) - A multiple Olympic and World medallist, Scott remains one of Europe's most versatile swimmers. He's defending his European short-course 200m medley title and is always a threat in the freestyle and relay events thanks to his tactical racing and finishing strength.
  • Noe Ponti (SWI) - Switzerland's butterfly ace continues his rise after medal-winning performances at the 2020 Olympics and World Championships. Ponti excels in the 100m butterfly, where his explosive walls and consistent pace make him a title contender in Lublin.
  • Eneli Jefimova (EST) - Still a teenager, Jefimova has become a force in women's breaststroke. The European Junior Champion and world finalist is known for her lightning-fast starts and technical precision - she'll be one of the youngest but most dangerous names in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.
  • Angelina Kohler (GER) – 2024 world 100m butterfly champion, who won 200m butterfly gold and 100m butterfly silver at the last European Championships in Otopeni.
  • Filip Nowacki (GBR) - A rising star in the British squad - only 18, a junior world champion in breaststroke, now making his senior European short course debut in Lublin. Keep an eye on him in the 100m/200m breaststroke.
